« Le chemin des dames »
(Ladies way)
In september 2002, Steve Donnelly who is one of my favourite guitar player, often used by Mitchell Froom on his productions (Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega, Ron Sexmith, Randy Newman …), asked me if I would be agree to work on an acoustic project together. Mainly voice and guitars …
It was a good oportunity for me to do something different from my previous records. I now live in the french Alps. I have my own recording studio and I thought we could record everything there. At this time I started listening to Nick Drake records and the last Johnny Cash’s. Those records put a light on my way … I run on the « ladies way » ...
I gave this project this name because I wanted to put only songs about women and my relashionships with them … seen from a 40 ‘s years old man with a few different experiences … Not from a teenager ! « Ladies way » is too the transcription of « le chemin des dames » in french which is the tittle of a cruel battle during the first world war in France. Marc Esteve,a great french writer, wrote the beautiful lyrics of this tittle song, using tragic words for a funny and light song …
Steve came the first time in November 2002.
We recorded 7 songs. He came back for 8 other tracks in april 2003.
During summer 2004, I met Jean-Marc Butty who was drummer for
PJ Harvey, Calexico, Venus, Jean-Louis Murat … He’s from a small town not far from mine. Then he started to work on the project and brought some very good percussions ideas.
The album was finally mixed by Graham Pattison (Gomez, Joseph Arthur) in winter 2007 in Brighton ( England) … The city where I used to go when I was a mod.
It was a project, with a long story and some long breaks because of my other activities and planning coordination with other musicians, but I am now very glad to invite you on my « ladies way » (le chemin des dames ») …
